Hoodie: An Open Source Incremental Processing Framework from Uber

Register here.

Even after a decade, the name “Hadoop" remains synonymous with "big data”, even as new options for processing/querying (stream processing, in-memory analytics, interactive sql) and storage services (S3/Google Cloud/Azure) have emerged & unlocked new possibilities. However, the overall data architecture has become more complex with more moving parts and specialized systems, leading to duplication of data and strain on usability . In this talk, we argue that by adding some missing blocks to existing Hadoop stack, we are able to a provide similar capabilities right on top of Hadoop, at reduced cost and increased efficiency, greatly simplifying the overall architecture as well in the process. We will discuss the need for incremental processing primitives on Hadoop, motivating them with some real world problems from Uber. We will then introduce “Hoodie”, an open source spark library built at Uber, to enable faster data for petabyte scale data analytics and solve these problems. We will deep dive into the design & implementation of the system and discuss the core concepts around timeline consistency, tradeoffs between ingest speed & query performance. We contrast Hoodie with similar systems in the space, discuss how its deployed across Hadoop ecosystem at Uber and finally also share the technical direction ahead for the project.

Speaker: VINOTH CHANDAR, Staff Software Engineer at Uber

Vinoth is the founding engineer/architect of the data team at Uber, as well as the author of many data processing & querying systems at Uber, including "Hoodie". He has keen interest in unified architectures for data analytics and processing.
Previously, Vinoth was the lead on Linkedin’s Voldemort key value store and has also worked on Oracle Database replication engine, HPC, and stream processing.

Text Summarization and Abstraction with Deep Learning

Hosted by AI Frontiers. Register here.

Information overload could be managed better if we could generate summaries of large text/documents. Historically AI based summarization techniques involved copy-pasting of relevant text from the original text to form the summary, called extractive summarization. Of late, progress has been on the new technique called abstractive summarization in creating summaries by using/creating words that were not in the original text.

I would like to discuss the history of summarization, techniques used to create summaries and improvements brought about in this area of research. I would like to also talk about implementation solutions used by the authors (of the focus-paper) and that of others.

Many papers are published in this area of research. The latest paper that is creating waves is written by Richard Socher et al, titled A deep Reinforced Model for Abstractive Summarization.

Note to attendees: If you are new to this field or if you are already baptized into ML/NLP but want to know more, this is the forum. I am eagerly looking for feedback and comments.

Papers:

(Focus paper)

Romain Paulus, C Xiong, R Socher, "A Deep Reinforced Model for Abstractive Summarization", May 2017, arXiv preprint arXiv:1705.04304

When Every Device Can See-AI & Embedded Vision in Products - Jeff Bier

https://www.eventbrite.com/e/when-every-device-can-see-ai-embedded-vision-in-products-jeff-bier-tickets-32144095856

HOST: Silicon Catalyst

AGENDA

6:00-6:30 pm: Meet and Greet

6:30-7:30 pm: Presentation from Jeff Bier

7:30-8:00pm: Q&A

ABSTRACT

In nature, intelligence and vision are tightly linked: virtually every species we consider to be intelligent has been equipped by evolution with vision. Similarly, to truly be intelligent, our devices and applications need visual perception. Most systems today lack vision because computer vision technology has been too expensive, too power-hungry, too complex – and too unreliable. But this is now changing with breathtaking speed. Accelerating advances in processors, algorithms, sensors, and development tools and techniques are increasingly making it both attractive and practical to equip all kinds of systems with vision, including high-volume, battery-powered devices. Artificial neural networks play a critical part of this transformation.

In this presentation, Jeff will share his unique perspective – informed both by product development projects and by interactions with many industry players – on the most important technology trends enabling the widespread use of embedded vision in products, with particular emphasis on deep learning. Jeff will also highlight examples of innovative products that illustrate the potential for vision to fundamentally change the capabilities of devices and to enable new business models.

SPEAKER BIO

Jeff Bier is the Founder of the Embedded Vision Alliance, a partnership of 60+ technology companies that works to enable the widespread use of practical computer vision. He is also the General Chairman of the Embedded Vision Summit (May 1-3, 2017 in Santa Clara, California) — the only conference devoted to enabling product creators to build better products using computer vision. Jeff is also president of BDTI. Jeff is a frequent keynote and invited speaker at industry conferences, and writes the popular monthly column “Impulse Response”.

The State of Deep Learning on Mobile

https://www.meetup.com/sviphone/events/234006876/

Speaker: Nand Dalal

It’s 2017, and computers can see. Still, it can be challenging to integrate deep learning into our apps. I’ll go over the best approaches, including Tensorflow, and show how the new Clarifai SDK makes it easy to train models in real-time on a device and share them among users.

Nand is a research engineer at Clarifai, where he works on building out machine learning capabilities and bringing them to new platforms, like mobile. Prior to Clarifai, he was an undergrad at the University of Michigan working with Professor Honglak Lee.
